Convert HEIC to PNG

Free, instant, and done right here — your photos never leave your device.

Your photos never leave your device — everything happens right here in your browser.

How it works

  1. 1

Drop your HEIC files below — or tap to choose them

  2. 2

They convert to PNG right on your device, nothing is uploaded

  3. 3

Download your PNGs individually or all at once as a ZIP

HEIC is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. Apple chose it because it delivers roughly half the file size of older formats without a visible drop in quality. That efficiency is handy on your phone, but HEIC files are not widely supported outside Apple devices — many apps, websites, and Windows users simply cannot open them.

Most of the time, converting HEIC to JPG is the right move — JPG is smaller and opens everywhere. But sometimes you specifically need PNG: for example, if you're preparing an image for graphic design work, want to do further editing without any additional compression, or need to drop a photo into a document that handles PNG better. PNG is a lossless format, which means no image detail is thrown away during conversion.

One thing worth knowing: if your original HEIC photo was captured by the iPhone camera, it does not contain transparency. Converting it to PNG produces a lossless copy of the photo, but PNG's transparency support won't come into play — you'd need an editing app to remove a background. PNG files from photos are also noticeably larger than the HEIC originals or an equivalent JPG, so use this tool when you genuinely need lossless output, not just as a general-purpose converter.

imgAxe does all of this right in your browser. Your photos never leave your device — no server, no upload, no account. In January 2026, the FBI warned that many free online file converters bundle malware into the files they return. With imgAxe, there is nothing to download except your converted images, and you can confirm no data leaves your device by checking the Network tab in your browser's developer tools during conversion.

Common questions

Is this tool free to use?
Yes, completely free — no account, no subscription, no watermark. You can convert as many HEIC files as your device can handle.
Do my photos get sent to a server?
No. Everything runs right in your browser using your own device. Open your browser's Network tab while converting and you will see zero outbound image traffic — nothing is transmitted.
Why is the PNG file larger than the original HEIC?
PNG is a lossless format — it stores every pixel exactly. HEIC and JPG both use clever compression that discards imperceptible detail to save space. A lossless copy of the same photo will always be bigger. If file size matters more than losslessness, try our HEIC to JPG tool instead.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
Not automatically. iPhone camera shots are fully opaque — the HEIC file has no transparency layer to preserve. The PNG output will look identical to the original photo, just in a different format. To remove a background you'll need an editing app after converting.
Is there a limit on how many files I can convert at once?
There is no limit imposed by imgAxe. The practical cap is your device's available memory. In our testing, a modern phone or laptop handles batches of 20–30 high-resolution photos comfortably.
