JPG is the format most photos arrive in — from digital cameras, downloaded images, and anything shared online. It is compact and opens everywhere, which makes it the default for photography. But JPG uses lossy compression: every time you edit and re-save a JPG, it discards a little more image data. If you are planning to edit an image in a photo or design app and save it multiple times, each save can introduce visible artifacts. Converting to PNG once, doing your edits in PNG, then saving the final version back to JPG is a common way professionals avoid this.
PNG is also the right format when you need a transparent background. JPG cannot store transparency at all — it always has a solid background. If you want to remove the background from a JPG photo and use it as a cut-out, convert to PNG first, then use an editing tool to remove the background. The PNG format supports full transparency and will preserve your work.
One honest note: converting a JPG to PNG does not recover any quality that JPG compression already discarded. If your JPG was saved at low quality, the PNG will be a lossless copy of that lower-quality image — it will not look sharper. What you gain is the ability to edit and re-save without any further quality loss, and support for transparency. Think of it as a preservation step, not a restoration step.
imgAxe runs the conversion right in your browser. Your images stay on your device the whole time — nothing is uploaded, no account needed. You can confirm this by opening your browser's Network tab during conversion; you'll see no outbound requests.
Common questions
- Is this tool free?
- Yes, completely. No subscription, no signup, no watermark. Convert as many JPG files as you like.
- Do my files leave my device?
- No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser. Your images never reach any server. Open your browser's Network tab during a conversion and you'll see zero outbound image traffic — nothing is transmitted.
- Will converting JPG to PNG improve the image quality?
- No. PNG is lossless, which means your PNG will be an exact copy of the JPG without further loss — but any quality that JPG compression already removed cannot be recovered. The benefit of PNG is that future edits and re-saves won't reduce quality further.
- Can I make the background transparent after converting?
- Converting to PNG gives you a format that supports transparency, but it does not automatically remove the background. You'll need a separate editing tool to do that. Converting first is the necessary first step — you cannot add transparency to a JPG at all.
- The PNG file is much bigger than the JPG — is that normal?
- Yes. PNG stores every pixel without compression loss, so photo files are naturally much larger than their JPG counterparts. A 500 KB JPG photo might become a 3–5 MB PNG. This is expected and is the trade-off for losslessness.
