WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that delivers significantly smaller files than PNG at comparable quality — typically 25 to 35 percent smaller for the same visual result. If you are building a website or preparing images for a web app, switching from PNG to WebP is one of the simplest ways to speed up page loads without changing how anything looks to the visitor.
Importantly, WebP supports full transparency, just like PNG does. That means icons, logos, and graphics with transparent or semi-transparent backgrounds convert cleanly without any white fill or edge artifacts. If you have been holding onto large PNGs because you need that transparency layer, WebP is the natural upgrade — smaller files, same alpha support.
Browser and software support for WebP is now excellent. All major browsers — Chrome, Firefox, Safari (since macOS 11 Big Sur), and Edge — handle WebP natively. Most modern image-editing apps do too. Where WebP can still fall short is in very old software or specialised tools that haven't been updated in years. If your audience includes users on outdated systems, it is worth keeping the original PNG as a fallback.
imgAxe converts your PNGs to WebP entirely in your browser. Your files stay on your device throughout — nothing is uploaded, no account is required. Given the FBI's January 2026 warning about free conversion tools bundling malware, this matters more than it might seem. You can verify that no data leaves your device by watching the Network tab in your browser's developer tools while a conversion runs.
Common questions
- Is this converter free?
- Yes, completely free — no account, no watermark, no limit on file count. Use it as many times as you need.
- Are my files uploaded anywhere?
- No. Everything runs in your browser using your own device. Open your browser's Network tab during a conversion and you'll find zero outbound image traffic.
- Does WebP support transparent backgrounds?
- Yes. WebP supports full alpha transparency, so any transparent or semi-transparent areas in your PNG are preserved perfectly in the WebP output. No white fill, no edge artifacts.
- Will WebP files open in all apps and browsers?
- All major modern browsers support WebP natively, and most updated image-editing apps do too. Very old software — think apps last updated before 2020 — may not. If compatibility with older systems is important, PNG remains the safer choice.
- Is there a file size limit?
- imgAxe does not set a file size limit. The practical cap is your device's memory. Modern laptops and phones handle batches of large PNGs without trouble.
